Calling All Ideas

Energy stocks are getting absolutely crushed because of BP. The sector is down over 30% in the span of less than three months. I believe that there are babies being thrown out with the bathwater but am not familiar with the sector. If anybody knows of these babies please post it on the message board with a brief explanation.

I bought Petrobras, which I have owned several times. Petrobras has formidable reserves and, as a national oil company, does not have to suffer the kind of expropriation that multinationals like BP do in nations like Russia. The Brazilian government is relatively benign in its handling of Petrobras--they own stock as well as collecting taxes and dividends. You will notice that Petrobras is up today... I have also been buying out of the money calls on USO. USO is a very unsatisfactory vehicle because of the tracking error created by losses when they roll their contracts, but I want protection against the possibility of hostilities that obstruct the Straits of Hormuz.

I dont know much about PBR but the reason I I am hesitant to buy petrobras is because they are trying to do an extremely large stock offering this Summer. I think I read over $30 billion.
